Opening concert: Brendan Perry @ Dom Church
Brendan Perry (Dead Can Dance) will play an exclusive show in the Dom Church on the Summer Darkness Friday. Brendan Perry has quite a reputation thanks to his past as one half of Dead Can Dance. This legendary band was active during the 1980s and the 1990s and changed the lives of many. After a Dead Can Dance reunion in 2005, Perry returns with 'Ark', his first solo album in 11 years. On 'Ark', he reverts to the highly modest and serene classic sound of his old band. That means beautiful icy, cool tension and majestic primitive folk. So dive deep into Perry's sultry baritone and let yourself be taken away into his beautiful world.
Attention: single tickets are available for this show, there is limited seating available. Tickets are almost sold out. More information can be found on http://www.summerdarkness.nl.
Bal du Masque
On the opening night Medusa will transform Tivoli Oudegracht into a night club. Moulin Rouge, the Speak Easy feeling of the twenties, the Berlin of the fourties, Cirque Bizarre and Día de los Muertos meet in a dark embrace on this special edition of Bal du Masque. A new underground is presented on Summer Darkness!
On Friday the 13th, the white and the black angel welcome you to a night that is just as romantic as decadent. To see and not be seen, that’s what it’s about at Bal du Masque. The music varies from Marlene Dietrich to Dead Can Dance and from Clan Of Xymox to Depeche Mode. Behind her elf bar the green fairy will cheerfully pour Absint, the drink popular among artists from the Fin de Siècle of the 19th century. Downstairs is Moulin Rouge! Sexy! Party! A bizarre circus! On stage, mystery acts will perform. Sometimes modest, sometimes exuberant, but always stylish.

PROJECT PITCHFORK Project Pitchfork is one of the masters of electro-goth and darkwave. The hammering beats like Kraftwerk, Die Krupps and Front 242 form the backbone for appealing industrial songs that one after one reach high into the German charts. No wonder Rammstein and In Strict Confidence took their sound partly from this band. After a few side projects and a couple of albums on which frontman Peter Spilles and his bandmates experimented with different new influences, Project Pitchfork has returned to the great straightforward electro for wich they are known and loved. A must for every
industrial lover!
Other confirmations:
Besdides these fine artists Summer darkness can confirm: Grendel (industrial, electronica, electro) Aesthetic Perfection (hardhitting electro, industrial), W.A.S.T.E (experimental, harsh industrial, noise) and Mono Amine (noisecore, industrial, teKno), Diorama (electro, powerpop, ghotic), Zwarte Poëzie (Dutch, poetry, spoken word) and Jännerwein (Folk, Acoustic). All info can be found attached or at
AESTHETIC PERFECTION - The beauty in violence and the violence of beauty, all come together in the intense but melodic emotronic music by Aesthetic Perfection. No matter how fiendish Daniel Graves’ howl may sound, and how loud and dirty the beats are, Graves always stays true to his instinct for good melodies and to the laws of the dancefloor. It’s no coincidence then that Graves also plays in the synthpop band Necessary Responce, does DJ sets and makes remixes – he even made one of a Lady Gaga song!
Fans of Grendel and Combichrist will have a lot to love in the powerful music of Aesthetic Perfection.
W.A.S.T.E. makes the music for post-apocalyptic parties. Listening to this band’s unstoppable drain pipe beats, you feel like you’re trapped in an old bunker in a burned down world, together with the last remaining survivors of a nuclear disaster. “You’ll burn in hell!”, a sampled voice tells us – as if we still had any doubt about that. Xonox, Alter der Ruine and Converter would nod approvingly upon hearing this duo from Los Angeles spit out their deliciously violent and merciless music. Recommended and scary as hell.
MONO-AMINE is the noisecore/industrial-sensation Joost G, also the driving force behind the Darkforce organisation. With Darkforce, Joost G organises events for the promotion of loud underground music, with his own project Mono-Amine he promotes the destructive psychedelic mindfuck. Even better than the anti depressant that the act is named after, Mono-Amine will leave you in a state of euphoria and full of adrenaline. This unavoidable electronic warfare will start the special industrial night '911' of Summer Darkness in a fittingly sick style.
GRENDEL- A good beat and bassline, oh, we can't imagine how we could ever live without that combination. Luckily, we don't have to, because there are always bands like Grendel from The Hague to deliver us our much-needed portion of harsh electro music. Grendel pairs the hammering beats with poppy synth melodies and a mix of distorted and clean singing, like Combichrist, Aesthetic Perfection and Suicide Commondo. Enough to let the dancefloor of Summer Darkness boil and burn, screaming: "Harder, faster, better, louder!" New album coming this summer!
DIORAMA- That dreamers can be cynical too – and the other way around - is proved by the German electropop band Diorama, who combine cynical and bitter lyrics and heavy beats with introspection and resignation. Loud and danceable, but also vulnerable beneath the surface. In Germany, the band scored many hits and they are so popular that there is even a cover band that plays only songs by Diorama, under the funny name of Amaroid. We stick to the originals, who are strongly recommended to every fan of electropop like VNV Nation and In Strict Confidence.
JÄNNERWEIN - makes neofolk full of bravura and machismo. Three men with guitars, violins accordions and voices that blow you away. Rustic and calm, but full of restrained force. Old-fashioned Real Men, in other words, the kind that you could find anywhere 500 years ago, but sadly not so much anymore these days. Their music makes you wish for a fireplace and some sort of home-made alcoholic brew, or simply for the Dom church, where they will play at Summer Darkness. Beautiful martial folk from the great label Heimatfolk, for fans of Belborn, Sturmprecht and Death In June.
ZWARTE POEZIE - Even though melancholy and dark romanticism are timeless and are enjoyed or suffered in all countries among all persuasions, Dutch new wave somehow still remains a rarity. Zwarte Poëzie (translated as Black Poetry), the band of singer/songwriter Edwin van der Velde, do have the guts to sing about their grief in their own mother tongue. Musically, Van der Velde gets his inspiration from bands like Placebo, The Cure and Joy Division, the lyrics are based on the daily sorrow and self-hatred of boys and girls in Utrecht, Bunnik and Armelisweerd – in other words, boys and girls like you and I. Unique and brave, a Dutch band that we should be proud of.
Market The heart of the Summer Darkness festival is Domplein, the square in the city centre, home of the famous tower the Dom. During the festival Domplein will be filled with market stands, a respectable stage and a terrace. Acoustic performances will take place, as well as fashion shows, both can be accompanied by some food and drinks! Attitude Holland is one of the new confirmed stand holders, but Attitude does more than selling their gear: the webshop support Summer Darkness by organising a fashion show and selling Summer Darkness merchandise through their website www.attitudeholland.nl. Other new confirmed market stands are, among others, Macbat’s Effect (tattoo’s etc, NL) and Made-In / Silver Fantasy (jewellry, NL). Earlier other market stands, like De Bard (CD’s, NL), Heresy Clothing (clothing, UK) and Underground Fashion (clothing & assecoires, DE) have been confirmed.
International collaborations More than previuous years, Summer Darkness has started international collaborations. The festival has two international pre sale locations: the music stores Emso in Germany and MusicNonStop in the UK. Besides that Summer Darkness has arranged two Summer Darkness specials last month, one in Denmark and one in Belgium. Besides this, there is a collaboration with several German parties: magazine Negatief and webshop XtraX have agreed to send flyers along with their sendings.
Magazine Nachtplan and festival Amphi have agreed to make a promotion deal, including banner and advertisement exchanges.Info Summer Darkness Summer Darkness is a dark underground interdisciplinary festival, located in beautiful premises of the gothic city centre of Utrecht. Apart from the location, Summer Darkness outshines in a mixture of music, gothic fashion, arts, market, gothic picnics, undergrounddancenights, boattrips etc.
A quick glance at this years line-up, plus the ones from previous years, will show that Summer Darkness brings together a varied array of bands and genres today's underground has to offer. Gothrock, retro-wave, gothic-metal, avant-garde, darkambient, hellectro, medieval, neo-folk, EBM, darkwave, synthpop, industrialrock, futurepop, neo-classical or noise: take your pick, its all there.

Here you find a interesting live review, done by the Italian Filth Forge E-Zine, of IANVA's wonderful explosive live show on Wave Gothic Treffen 2009. It gives a nice view of what might to expect. Ianva will play twice on Summer Darkness, Saturday you can admire them in one of the churces in Utrecht and on Sunday with a complete club show in Tivoli de Helling.
It was time for IANVA to play their second gig in Leipzig, six months after the successful German debut few kilometers away at the Hellraiser club. Useless to say, I felt damn lucky to be present at both shows! On the menacing intro of "Colpo Di Maglio", the band took place behind the curtains, and, as the scene opened, it was welcomed with warm enthusiasm by everyone. This Italian heavy weight has played just very few selected concerts, so this was a precious opportunity for many fans to see it on stage. The first part was centred upon their by now legendary debut "Disobbedisco!", with "La Ballata Dell'Ardito", "Vittoria Mutilata", "Di Nuovo In Armi", "Per Non Dormire" and "Muri D'Assenzio" unleashing the Genovese ensemble full mastery. "Tango Della Menade" saw the appearance of Stefania, whose astonishing vocals enabled us to touch another of the whole Treffen's highest peaks. Emotions flew like rivers of lava, the atmosphere inside the Schauspielhaus became scorching.
But, the best had yet to come: Ianva were about to release their second opus, "Italia: Ultimo Atto", so what better occasion to present some extracts from this new incredibly beautiful work? Most of us were introduced to the brand-new songs for the very first time, yet the impact was devastating at once. Words will hardly catch the dramatic climax of "Luisa Ferida", with Stefania's most impressive interpretation to date, or the vitriol-filled sarcasm of "In Compagnia Dei Lupi", again with her as "prima donna" on stage. Mercy's sad, tension-filled and extremely focused words were back under the spotlights with the melancholic elegy of "Pasionaria" (strong of a distinctive "Morriconian" feeling) and final, epic "Dov'Eri Tu Quel Giorno?", already tested as preview in Engelsdorf at New Year's Eve.
With the skill of the great and inspired musicians they are, Ianva won a standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience, conquering them with their honesty and, I dare say, purity. Yes, because you rarely meet a band able to communicate its vision and take you inside its lyrical world with the same expressive power as Ianva, yet, at the same time, you realize that Mercy and Stefania's words are not just songs, they are something more, something that goes beyond: it's their whole life they put in what they do, their feelings, their passions, their delusions and their hopes, it's like grasping what's coming out of their bleeding hearts. For this, as well as many other reasons, they deserve a long, uproarious applause.
The flamboyant and many-headed Italian darkfolk cabaret ensemble Ianva has released a great new conceptalbum with the title Italia: Ultimo Atto. Passionated melancholic folk music with an influence of melodramatic cabaret delivered Ianva much praise on previous releases and this was completely justified so the expectations for this new album were pretty high. Italia: Ultimo Atto deals with the darkest and most controversial times of Italian history of the last 60 years as seen through the eyes of the oppressed, the idealists and the honest men. Through the eyes of the eternally defeated. It deals with partisans and fascists, war and corruption. The demise of the moral of a nation is transferred by splendid references to the most influential dissidents of those times, from Pasolini to Curzio Malaparte, from Pietro Germi to Giorgio Gaber, against a background in which the musical influence of the music from Dalida, Battisti and Morricone is reflected.
Inava creates beautiful suggestive film-noir atmospheres that take the listener on a trip to a world in which the musical flow of the Italian city comes together with the chansons of Jacques Brel, the visually focused epic compositions of Morricone and the most experimental progressive rock from the ‘70s. The vocals are done by Mercy and Stefania D’Alterio. Italia: Ultimo Atto shows Ianva at its best. Powerful, epic and compelling. Ianva has again achieved to improve themselves. This also goes for the artwork and the packaging since the cd is packaged into a hardcover booklet that contains the lyrics of each song together with a historical photograph and a brief description of the historical event the song deals with. This release deserves the highest grade. A must buy.
Allerseelen CD Rauhe Schale: Apart from Dimo Dimov who not only drums but also plays electric guitar on some songs and the bassist Marcel P., Allerseelen this time also features two well-known violinists from the world of neo-folk and folk metal: Meri Tadic - from the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie - and Annabel Lee, the violinist of the American formation Blood Axis who also released some weeks ago a new cd. Live will Allerseelen be accompanied in Utrecht by the female drummer Christien H. known for her amazing drum skills in Dutch groups like H.E.R.R. and Volksweerbaarheid.
--------------
The Austrian group Allerseelen is, two years after their successful cd release Hallstatt, back with a brand-new album that fascinates musically as well as optically: Rauhe Schale (Rough Shell) is the title of the opus that was released some days ago. Already the first sight into the beautiful booklete of the digipack production on Ahnstern shows that this cd differs in various parts from its precursors: Allerseelen, live having been for a long time with various members performing in many cities in North America, Europe and Russia, has been nevertheless in the studio almost a solo-project by its founder Gerhard Hallstatt, assisted from time to time by various guest musicians. This has changed now, now Allerseelen is also in the studio a real group with electronics, bass, electric guitar and drums. On several pieces there are also contributions by two well-known violinists from the world of neo-folk and folk metal. Apart from Dimo Dimov who not only drums but also plays electric guitar on some songs and the bassist Marcel P., Allerseelen this time also features the two violinists Meri Tadic - from the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie - and Annabel Lee, the violinist of the American formation Blood Axis who also released some weeks ago a new cd.
Still it is not easy to describe the style of Allerseelen - everything moves and flows in a field of force between industrial, metal, folklore and pop. Lovers of bands like Nine Inch Nails, Einstürzende Neubauten, Laibach or Underworld could also fall in love with Allerseelen. On Rauhe Schale there are various songs with a powerful metal atmosphere with electronic, industrial recordings - some minutes later one may discover again a song that sounds more like dark pop. Gerhard Hallstatt sometimes describes his music as Electronic Folklore or Apocalyptic Rock. But basically there is no real description for Allerseelen - all attempts to find an expression for their music may be valid for some time, yet lose their meaning after a couple of months or years.
The cd Rauhe Schale sounds like its title - the music is rough, tough, hard like already the last album Hallstatt that received enthusiastic feedback due to its fascinating combination of electronic beats and strings and some compositions reminding in some way of Black Metal.
These songs were inspired by various magical mystery tours in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy and Slovenia. They were recorded and mixed in 2009 at Haus zur letzten Latern, Dungeon Studio (Rhenania), Luftschutzkerker and Vitosha Studio 4. The Mastering took place at Luftschutzkerker in March 2010: http://www.luftschutzkerker.com
All lyrics were written by Gerhard Hallstatt except Sturmlied by Ricarda Huch, Rauhnachtkamerad by Herybert Menzel, Wo ist das Leben by Alfred Kubin. All texts were translated by Simon Collins (Drengskap). The photographs were taken by Gerhard Hallstatt. The artwork was created by HaateKaate: http://www.haatekaate.com.
Bass: Marcel P.
E-Guitar, Piano: Dimo Dimov
Violin: Meri Tadic (Jede Welle, Ob auch mein Herz so funkelt, Diese Nähe ist Gefahr)
Violin: Annabel Lee (Herbstlied, Die Klänge, Niemandsland)
Backing vocals: Lisa
Tonkunst, Vocals: Gerhard Hallstatt

SUMMER DARKNESS FESTIVAL 2010 Time schedule revealed
Club nights at Summer Darkness
The timeschedule of the dark underground lifestyle festival Summer Darkness is published at: www.summerdarkness.nl.
From 13 - 15 August the Summer Darkness Festival 2010 will take place in the heart of The Netherlands: the city of Utrecht. Only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam, this city has a unique gothic centre and a diversity of small clubs. This eighth edition of the Summer Darkness Festival is again packed with the best live music, poetry, arts and fashion.
Summer Darkness also features several club nights to party till late. On Friday we go in style and masked to Bal Du Masque. On Saturday there is Cyberia and the Industrial Night. On the last night, Sunday right after headliner DAF, there is the official after-party Spinning Further Towards the End.
Alter der Ruïne and W.A.S.T.E. unfortunately had to cancel for the Industrial Night, but happily we found more than worthy replacements: From Flint Glass to Tzolk’in to Empusae and Geistform. Cyberia goes back for a one-ff and xxxclusive edition to the location where it took place 13 years ago: the hall that’s now called the Spiegelbar (mirrorbar), next to the balcony of Tivoli Oudegracht. Saturday afternoon the Spiegelbar is the X-Rated Ambient Stage hosted by KinkFM DJ Bob Rusche.
Masks are required and for sale at the party.
Cyberia
Cyberia is the longest ongoing dark underground/gothic club night of the Netherlands. Thirtheen years ago Cyberia took place in the hall that’s now called the Spiegelbar (mirrorbar), next to the balcony of Tivoli Oudegracht. For a one-off and xxxclusive edition we go back to this legendary hall with music ranging from Electro to Future Pop, from EBM to Electro Industrial, from Nu-wave to Dark Pop and from Synth Pop till Hellectro. Covenant, VNV nation, Spetsnaz, Combichrist, Editors, Miss Kitten, Mesh and Suicide Commando. You can hear it all at Cyberia, a Dark Underground combination of Hits, Tips and Classixs with DJ -X-X-X-, DJ SPUD and DJ PRIMI.
X-Rated Ambient Stage
Saturday afternoon, before Cyberia takes control over the Spiegelbar, the KinkFM radioshow X-Rated hosts a special program of ambient. The X-Rated radio show on KinkFM is one of the most special, beautiful, dark and obscure radio shows that exist in the Netherlands. Every Sunday at 21:00 you can tune-in to X-Rated on KinkFM Radio. X-Rated was founded in 1995 by late Arjen Grolleman. Of-course, just as last year Summer Darkness features the X-Rated stage again where this year the dark ambient acts: Phelios and Allseits will present their new albums.
Drone musician Nina Kemicke a.k.a. Allseits takes her inspiration from the deepest and darkest undertows of the human soul, and looks for the width and depth in sounds that seem to come straight out of hell. Her ultra-minimal music is like a vast gas cloud that washes over you, elusive but inescapable and piercing right through everything.
Phelios is the alias of the German musician Martin Stürtzer, who makes noisy dark ambient. First, he released his music himself, free on the internet, which led him to get signed by quality labels such as Eternal Soul and Loki Found. His music consists of long soundscapes, without rythm or melody, beautifully deep and layered sound fields that have a thrilling, very subtle dynamic.
Industrial Night
Traditionally, the Industrial Night on Summer Darkness is the absolute climax in aural experience. The most intense, noisy, loud and steamy night of the festival. As a brutal punching monster this night features the musically most extreme acts and together with DJ sets by DistortedChaos & Krat it becomes a full force club night with a lot of excitement and pollution.
From Flint Glass to Tzolk’in to Empusae (FR/BE)
The Industrial Night of Summer Darkness 2010 will have a very special, never done before openings show. Three projects morphing from one in to the other and further, showing all their combined force and new sounds. This al blended in to one truly unique live experience. The three projects are the one man projects Flint Glass and Empusae, and their collaboration project Tzolk’in. Mind you: the man behind Empusae is also a member of This Morn’ Omina. Especially and exclusively for Summer Darkness, these two great musicians will give you the best of these three projects, presented as a very exiting cocktail to open the Industrial Night with, which will warm you up and will prepare you for the intense climax of this day.
Geistform (ES)
Even though the name suggests otherwise, Geistform is from Spain: Rafael Martinez Espinosa. As Geistform he lets his love for old, analogue synthesizers run free. Sharp beats, oscillator sounds and other noise: Geistform cuts and pasts his electronic-industrial music into one piece with the meticulous precision of a watchmaker. After the albums Uno and Sequentia 2.0 (and don’t forget his work for the Dive album Behind the Sun) in 2008, he released the climax of his career so far: Pro Analogic, Powernoise as powernoise is meant to be!
Mono-Amine (NL)
Mono-Amine is the noisecore/industrial-sensation Joost G, also the driving force behind the Darkforce organisation. With Darkforce, Joost G organises events for the promotion of loud underground music, with his own project Mono-Amine he promotes the destructive psychedelic mindfuck. Even better than the anti depressant that the act is named after, Mono-Amine will leave you in a state of euphoria and full of adrenaline. This unavoidable electronic warfare will start the special industrial night of Summer Darkness in a fittingly sick style.
Imminent (BE)
Imminent is the Belgian industrial producer Olivier Moreau. In his music, Moreau does not wield the axe, but he uses his tools like surgical filleting knives, hitting even harder in the end. He builds complex, layered rythms, and puts atmospheric, slightly sinister textures on top of that – whistles, layers of synths, samples. The music is a sparkling and very exciting sonic pallet, that will leave you chained to the floor. Imminent made remixes for Sonar, Iszoloscope en Orphx and collaborated with Synapscape. The intelligent, but loud music of these bands is surpassed even by the great soundscapes of Imminent.
Spinning Further Towards The End
Official afterparty with DJ –X-X-X-, DJ Krat, DJ Spud, DJ Azrael & DJ DistortedChaos.
Complete programme
The complete line-up consists of more than 50 (inter)national bands, including exclusive performances from artists like Brendan Perry, Daf, And One and Project Pitchfork. It varies from the Celtic Folk from Orfeo and Keltia to the more experimental electronica from In Slaughter Natives and Geneviéve Pasquier. Besides live music, Summer Darkness offers lots of other art forms from the Dark Underground scene. Such as poetry from Poel Des Doods, the Cinema Obscure Viewing of Sopor Aeternus and fashion shows (from among others Attitude Holland). Striking this year are the X-rated Ambient stage at the Spiegelbar and Bal du Masque.

Utrecht completely in theme of dark underground lifestyle and art
In less than a week, Utrecht will be in the theme of the Summer Darkness festival for the eighth time. Besides in Tivoli Oudegracht, there are special acoustic concerts in churches like the Dom Church. At nighttime, different clubnights will take place, for example the masked ball: Bal du Masque. The Dom Square will be transformed into the heart of the festival for three days, with a Gothic/Fantasy/Dark Underground Market, concerts and fashion shows. Also there will be poetry on a boat in the beautiful canals of Utrecht and a guided gothic city walk will take place. Besides this, the festival will be enriched by Trajectum Lumen, an exploration in the dark, through the historic premises of Utrecht.
Highlight of the programme
A few highlights mentioned in short:
Brendan Perry: Brendan Perry (Dead Can Dance) will play an exclusive show in the Dom Church on the Summer Darkness Friday. Brendan Perry has quite a reputation thanks to his past as one half of Dead Can Dance. This legendary band was active during the 1980s and the 1990s and changed the lives of many.
And One: The German band And One has had its twentieth birthday already, but still continues with their mix of EBM and synthpop: tight eighties beats, delightful synthesizers and the glowing voice of frontman Steve Naghavi.
DAF: DAF, the godfathers of EBM and techno, have returned. Gabi Delgado-Lopez and Robert Görl have settled their differences once again for a reunion tour, and they are working on new material.

Utrechts Dichtersgilde en Asfaltfeeën: The Utrecht Poets' Guild teams up with the ambient poetry-band Asfaltfeeën (Asphalt Faeries) to embark on a nocturnal boat tour along the medieval canals of Utrecht. Guided Gothic City walk: Starting and ending at Domplein a professional guide of ‘The Guild of Utrecht’ takes you along on the following Summer Darkness city walks of beauty and mystery.
Trajectum Lumen: It’s an age-old tale, tried and true. Even the Romans knew that Utrecht was unique. And so, around 50 A.D., they made their camp at the present location of Domplein. Ever since, this city in the heart of the Netherlands has always been full of activity..
Kelten Zonder Grenzen: Kelten Zonder Grenzen is not the type of band to make concessions of any kind, and so their version of Celtic music and culture is completely authentic, and translating their name to English is not appreciated. In a combination of theatre and music they put up a beautiful show that makes you think you have travelled back in time.
Sopor Aeternus Cinema Obscure Viewing: Anna-Varney Cantodea, the transgender frontwoman/-man of Sopor Aeternus, is not too fond of humans and for that reason she does not play live. For Summer Darkness, Cantodea - or “our beloved Goddess” as her followers call her - decided to communicate with her audience through a viewing of her DVDs “In der Palästra” en “The Goat...and other re-animated Bodies” at Pandhof.
Domplein Gothic Fantasy Market: Just like previous years, Summer Darkness will organise an atmospheric market on the Dom square during the festival. The market will consist of market stands, fashion shows, a terrace and live performances. There will be some good food available, as well as drinks!
X-rated Ambient Stage: Saturday afternoon, hours before Cyberia takes control over the Spiegelbar, the KinkFM radioshow X-Rated hosts a special programme of ambient. The X-Rated radio show on KinkFM is one of the most special, beautiful, dark and obscure radio shows that exist in the Netherlands.
